Friday, 5:10 a.m., six loaves in. Two for the office, two for the pantry, two for us. The six-strand braid is muscle memory now; the 5 a.m. is not.

Montrose Point, 6:40 a.m.: Connecticut warbler. Life bird #412. Stood very still for nine minutes and then had to sit down on a bench.

An invoice you don't understand is a question you're too polite to ask. Ask it. Any professional worth paying will answer.

Finished the 2,000-piece Ravensburger 'Library of Alexandria' in six days. The sky took four of them. Puzzles are the only area of life where I tolerate a lot of blue.

Evanston food pantry board meeting tonight. 1,900 households served last month, up 11% on last year. Numbers should make you do something. These do.

My father prepared returns at the kitchen table for 31 years. He never once charged a neighbour who couldn't pay. I think about that every time I sign off a bill.

May migration total: 94 species at Montrose, one grumpy owl, and a man with a $12,000 lens who asked what I was looking at through my $200 binoculars. The same bird, sir.
