Honey harvest done. 94 pounds this year, up from 90. Every lawyer in the firm gets a jar. Clients who ask get a jar. Opposing counsel: it depends.

Trust is the only product a law firm sells. Everything else, the briefs, the deals, the closings, is packaging.

Played 'Body and Soul' after dinner for the sons, who requested 'anything else.' Tough room. Fair review.

Ride Across Wisconsin last summer: 300 miles, two days, one saddle I will never speak of again. Signed up for 2027 this morning. Memory is a conflict of interest.

A conflict of interest is rarely dramatic. It is a name on an old file, a client's cousin, a company that bought a company. The check is boring. The consequence of skipping it is not.

Sat in at the Green Mill once, uninvited and briefly, in 2009. The band was gracious. The audience was honest. I have told this story to every associate as a lesson about preparation.

Learned English from courtroom dramas at nine. Still waiting, 35 years later, for the moment a lawyer gets to shout 'objection' and have it matter. It is never the shout. It is the file.
